The first three assignments build on each other scaffolding academic skills from the bottom up, from specific to more complex, that will serve you in future political science courses or courses in virtually any subject. The first assignment focused on the Canvas readings about power and the specific sources and forms of power. This second assignment will focus on power and human rights, and the third will include power, human rights, and justice.
This assignment uses two real-life political cases related to power, human rights, and justice. You will use the previous skills you developed in the last assignment for defining terms and describing the relationships between the terms and politics and your life. You will also begin to identify and compare main ideas in preparation for the next assignment. You must address both cases and answer all questions below for this assignment. Your assignment should be equivalent to four double-spaced pages in 12 pt. type.
1) The United States is facing a national reckoning on race and policing with the murders of Daunte Wright, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and many others. There is also a wide-ranging dialogue on race and racism. This video was chosen to help us understand this reckoning more fully. Paul Butler is a former federal prosecutor and currently a law professor. He wrote the book Chokehold: Policing Black Men in America which is the subject of this video interview (Links to an external site.) with Michelle Alexander author of the acclaimed book The New Jim Crow which was the basis for the documentary 13.

Choose two quotes/examples from the video. Define/describe the sources/forms of power that relate to each of these examples and then define/describe what generation of human rights relates to each example.

2) Consider the video where moral philosopher Peter Singer argues that justice asks us as individual citizens to help reduce global poverty and the arguments against or modifying his view in the Canvas readings that follow the video. respond to these areas: A) What generations of human rights do these arguments relate to? B) What sources/forms of power does Singer use to make his argument. C) Begin to explore our next skills, analysis and assessment, in preparation for next week. Compare two reasons Singer uses to support his case with two reasons from the arguments against his view or modifying his view. In what ways are these reasons different and in what ways, if at all, are they similar?
