Introduction

There has been an increased use of barcode technology in healthcare in the recent past as a strategy to reduce medical errors and the cost of care. In the last five decades, there have been significant efforts among healthcare providers to adopt barcode technology to enhance their service delivery. Technology also plays a vital role in promoting patient safety as healthcare professionals strive to eliminate cases of adverse events. I am interested in this topic because I know that barcode has the potential to enhance the quality of healthcare services provided to patients. The rate of medical errors is still high despite numerous strategies that stakeholders in the healthcare sector have taken to address it. I believe that barcode technology can help to minimize cases of adverse events in the future. An efficient barcode medical administration system can reduce many errors that physicians and nurses commit in the course of treating a patient. Consequently, it can reduce the mortality of patients significantly in a healthcare setting. This study will provide annotated bibliography on the topic of the use of barcode technology in the healthcare setting. I will review four journal articles that discuss various aspects of this topic. I will use several databases to conduct my research such as PubMed, Ebscohost, and Emerald among others. Some of the keywords I will use are “barcode technology”, “barcode medical administration system”, “patient safety”, and “barcode medical administration”.

The aim of this article was to investigate the barriers to using bar code technology and the requirements for using it properly in the hospital’s process.  Hachesu et al. (2016) based their study on the view that the misuse of barcode technology in the healthcare setting made it irrelevant to patients and healthcare professionals. They applied the observational-descriptive approach to enquire more about barriers and requirements of proper barcode use among 65 participants in hospitals.  Hachesu et al. (2016) found that about 90% of the hospitals that were investigated were not using barcode medical administration systems properly. There were also inadequate barcode scanners and labels in the institutions that were involved. Some of the important requirements for proper use of barcode use included training of staff, integration with the hospital information system (HIS), budgeting, and prioritizing these technologies in comparison with other alternatives. Inadequate knowledge of the requirements for barcode use was the major barrier in most hospitals. The article is vital to healthcare practitioners since it enlightens them on the appropriate ways of using the barcode in healthcare delivery. It provides important information on the requirements and barriers for using barcodes in medical administration. Finally, it offers the current status of the use of barcode medical administration systems in many hospitals.

The researchers found that the use of barcoding medication administration portrayed a significant reduction in medical errors across different healthcare settings. All the studies they reviewed indicated an inverse relationship between medical errors and the use of barcode technology. They noted that bar-coding medical administration systems helped nurses, pharmacists, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to reduce the likelihood of making a mistake in the delivery of services to patients. Consequently, they advocated for the adoption of this technology among healthcare providers to enhance the safety of patients. The article is relevant to healthcare professionals since it provides them with the benefits of using bar-coding technology in their organizations. The researchers focused on the use of this technology in patient-care areas and pharmacies in the US and UK. They realized that it is vital for healthcare practitioners to use it in their efforts to reduce medical errors in their work. For example, nurses can use bar-code technology to ensure that they administer the correct drugs to patients. Hence, the article is relevant since it shows healthcare professionals ought to use bar-code technology in their daily routines.

The author of the article was interested to know the factors that influence the effect of barcode technology in reducing errors among nurses. Baiden (2018) applied the socio-technical model as the conceptual framework for guiding the study. The author found that the effectiveness of bar-code technology in reducing medical errors among nurses was influenced by a broad range of factors. They included technology-related setbacks, clinical settings, and nurse-related problems. For example, nurses who exhibited negative attitudes toward barcode technology could not use it effectively to reduce medical errors in their work. The author also noted that nurse leaders have a critical role to play in the implementation of barcode technology. The information in this article is vital for healthcare practitioners since it sends more light on the factors that affect the effectiveness of the barcode medication administration technology. They can use the findings of this study to understand the factors they ought to address to enhance the efficiency of the technology in reducing medical errors.

Yen et al. (2015) conducted an experiment to develop a program that can be used to enhance the implementation of barcode technology. They had noted that the barcode technology had the potential to increase the safety of patients in different healthcare settings. In their background research, they had noted that the level of barcode implementation was about 32% in most of the hospitals. The low level of implementation was attributed to numerous factors such as poor wireless internet access, lack of knowledge among nurses, and patient disturbance emanating from the scanner’s beep sound. The article is critical to the healthcare practitioners since it provides specific steps they can take to improve the implementation of barcode technology from 32% to 80%. Some of these steps include helping patients to adjust the volume of the scanners, checking the integrity of the wristband, and increasing internet access points, among other strategies.

Conclusion/Recommendation

It is evident from the four articles that barcode technology has the potential to improve health outcomes in various healthcare settings. Effective implementation of the barcode medication administration system can significantly reduce medical errors to enhance patient safety. The technology can minimize cases of nurses and physicians administering wrong drugs and doses to patients. The studies also revealed numerous factors that affect the efficiency of barcode use in hospitals. These factors include the attitudes of nurses, technology-related setbacks, clinical setting, poor wireless internet access, lack of knowledge among nurses, and patient disturbance emanating from the scanner’s beep sound. Healthcare organizations can address these challenges to realize the full benefits of barcode technology. Proper use of the barcode medication administration system can help to increase patients’ level of satisfaction and retention, and improve the productivity of healthcare practitioners in the long run.
