Software Development Life Cycle refers to the stages and procedures followed in the project to come up with an information system for a business organization. In the Waterfall replica of SDLC each stage of the expansion has to be completed before the next. It follows a particular defined sequence. The stages are:

System Design

Barry Boehm and the Spiral Model

Barry Boehm was born 1935 in America. He is a software engineer who came up with the spiral model in1986.The model seeks to minimize risk by integrating both iterative and waterfall approaches. It allows for stage by stage release of the product to test its acceptability by the client and other stakeholders. The model is suitable for high risk projects which require constant evaluation. According to him, the spiral model is the most risk-averse and all the other models are spiral with different levels of risk -tolerance.

Agile Software Development

This is a process that is meant to reduce risk by breaking down the project into smaller portions that   is tackled simultaneously by different teams within predefined time limits. Normally a few weeks. It is designed to meet customer satisfaction as well as improve suppleness. Each progressive stage incorporates more features as per the needs of the client. This method does not require detailed planning from the start but there has to be constant communication with the customer to ascertain the specifications. At the end of each stage, the product is tested to prevent a failure in the future.

Each stage has its own planning, requirement analysis, designing, building and testing. Every progress is shown to the client and other people of interest.

This method is appropriate for business environments that are dynamic.

It is however not appropriate for some kinds of products such as very complex designs. Lack of proper documentation makes it difficult to transfer the skill to new members of an organization.

The analysis is important for decision making and strategic planning.

It refers to the organization’s abilities that exist and which gives it competitive edge. The Strengths

They may be both concrete or intangible. When utilized they make the firm profitable. They include able leadership, broad product range, good machinery, financial resources and many others.


These are the factors that hinder the organization from achieving its goal which is maximum profitability. They are internal and can be controlled or curbed altogether. For instance untrained employees, poor leadership, poor decision making amongst others.


They are chances prevented by the environment to the organization that when exploited will result into increased growth and profitability. They entail advanced technology, unmet customer demands, removal of trade regulation and others.


These are outside challenges that curb the business’ process and profitability. The organization has no power over them. They may be price wars, employee dissatisfaction, alteration in customers’ taste and preference and others.


SWOT analysis aids a firm to both realize its strength and build on it. Any weakness is set and minimized then eventually eliminated. Opportunities are grasped and maximized on to realize development. The organization is also better placed to overcome any threats. It is such vital tool in tactical planning.
