Facebook is one of the major social networks that allow various people to communicate with one another online. It was founded in early 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, fellow roommates and several other Harvard University students. Facebook was originally meant to serve Harvard University community but it later expanded to other colleges and high schools within Boston and finally to the entire global population (Jonathan 201). People with the intention of using Facebook must register as users and create personal profiles that will enable them interact with their friends. Facebook enables people to exchange various messages, share photographs, as well as subscribe to become members of certain organized groups. This online social network has over one billion users that regularly interact with one another and its earning had grown to more than $ 8 billion by 2013 (Deri 91).

Cons for Facebook

Facebook has grown to become a major social network that allows more than one billion people to interact online. Despite of its core role in enabling people to easily interact and share messages with their friends within and beyond various nations, it has negatively impacted the lives of many users. Facebook is a huge time consumer that has distracted many people from their professional duties as well as leisure time (Jack 115). A significant number of individuals have lost their employment as they are caught by their supervisors chatting with their friends rather than fulfilling their duties. This has also led to various companies making unfavorable returns due to the time wastage caused by the use of Facebook. Many students have been using their precious time on Facebook rather than on their studies and especially on accomplishing their homework and revisions (Jonathan 207). They also prefer to be on Facebook rather than be engaged in extracurricular activities that can enable them develop skills that can be vital in their career development. This has ultimately affected their academic and extracurricular performances, and as such, they are left to regret lost chances for improving their lives due to time wastage (Deri 94).

Facebook exposes people’s privacy, as many private institutions are able to access their private information. Research has shown that almost half of the Facebook users that leave the social network do so due to the exposure of their privacy. A pilot program known as Instant Personalization demonstrates that private information from Facebook users can easily be accessed by other institutions and members of the public. Various mistakes by the Facebook team have exposed people’s private information as third-party websites have access to information from Facebook (Jonathan 209). Facebook is renowned for its role in sharing private information with government agencies. This information helps the government agencies to locate people, establish crime as well as reveal information shared between individuals. Despite of various measures taken by Facebook users to protect such information, it ultimately gets into the public domain. Facebook has exposed crucial information about couples’ extramarital dealings and this has made many families break down and increase divorce cases. Data mining by non-Facebook users that have secretly accessed private information from Facebook users’ profiles has highlighted the privacy concerns within the social network (Jack 118).

Envy is another negative impact that Facebook instills in various users due to numerous misleading highlights posted by people on Facebook even though they are not true. These highlights usually include wall posts, videos, and photographs that depict very exciting and outstanding events and experiences. As most of these highlights only reveal the positive side of people’s lives, various users envy their lives and experiences not aware that these are only positive sides of life, not the entire life (Ogle 59). Users that are most financially challenged envy people that are financially able as they post events revealing luxury in contrast to poor individuals that only afford basic necessities. Such envy leads to depression, hatred, insecurity as well and an inferiority complex among Facebook users. According to Deri (96), one-third of all Facebook users that visit the site are left unsatisfied with the state of their lives as they compare it with those of others as indicated in various highlights. The greatest source of envy arises from photos that people post after attending luxurious vacations. This ultimately arouses jealousy among users that cannot afford such a lifestyle, as they do not have the means to do so (Jack 122).

Facebook has contributed to emerging cases of stress among various users. This is due to various reasons that include anxiety on the part of the users that fear missing important social information. They are also stressed due to the fear of offending their peers as they reject their friend requests as well as the feeling of displeasure as their peers reject their friend requests. Stress also occurs due to frequent intimidation and criticism of Facebook by their peers and other Facebook users. There are cases of dissatisfaction and unmet expectations by Facebook users that feel that their initial purpose to join Facebook is not accomplished (Jonathan 212).

Identity theft is another negative impact that Facebook has on its users, as various individuals are able to create accounts that belong to other people. This problem mainly affects celebrities as numerous people create false accounts belonging to them, and as such, false information about them is wrongly circulated on the site. This has led to numerous cases of fraud as people create accounts purporting to be needy and requiring help, and they receive donations without genuine reasons. Fraudsters have also created accounts that portray them as very attractive, thereby seducing unsuspecting people that may be seeking lovers and friends online and this ultimately leaves many people cheated and taken advantage of (Ogle 64).

Internet addiction is another adverse effect of Facebook, and this has made many frequent users experience uncomfortable feelings when not logged into the social network. According to Jack (127), a significant number of Facebook users feel unwell when they are not able to regularly use the social network. Various individuals that have quit using Facebook have likened that decision to that of quitting smoking or drinking alcohol. Many people have also ignored important chores and obligations to continue interacting with other Facebook users without counting the losses they undergo. People are increasingly giving up a better proportion of their sleeping hours to stay awake to be available for interacting with their friends and peers (Ogle 69).


Facebook remains to be the greatest social network around the globe offering more than a billion people a platform for social networking. This platform has enabled people of varied ages, classes, and religions to continually interact as long as they can access the Internet globally. Facebook has led to varying negative effects on its users as they daily interact with one another through the site. These negative effects include time wastage, exposure to privacy as well as arousing envy among its users. Facebook also attributes to emerging cases of stress, identity theft, and Internet addiction that have made users be largely unsatisfied after using the social network.
