Educating Kids about Mental Health

When dealing with children who have mental conditions, it is the teachers’ responsibility to ensure that these children not only feel comfortable in their environment but also that the other students understand their predicament and what to do to help them. Nevertheless, explaining to young children about mental health issues can be challenging because they might not understand some of the information. Teaching children how to relate with others with mental conditions can be hard because they might not understand mental illness. However, teaching plans and creating the right environment can help children relate well.

Teachers should supervise playtime to guide children on how to relate with one another. Children learn during playtime; thus, when a teacher shows them how to share toys and other learning materials, they are likely to embrace the lesson (Sorte, Daeschel, & Amador, 2017). Moreover, it is important for teachers to enforce rules on the playground for the protection of both the children who have mental conditions and those that do not.

Cognitive development theory stipulates that children learn and adapt behavior based on their environment. Children ape what adults do since they learn through observation (Cooley, 2006). As such, when a teacher treats a child in a certain manner and asks other children to treat the said child in the given way, they are likely to follow the instructions (Chen, 2014). Moreover, the teacher can tell children to be cautious with the way they interact with the children facing mental challenges.

Teaching plans are essential for they help teachers develop strategies on how to teach children. Teachers help students to learn how to relate to children who have mental conditions by showing them how to engage with each other. Furthermore, teachers can offer classes about mental conditions and use illustrations to help children understand.
