Introduction

Online courses have become more popular in today’s world due to changes in lifestyle and technology. Nowadays, students are searching for convenient ways to achieve their education goals while numerous colleges have embraced technology by offering online courses. Students have options to choose any college that may be offering their preferred courses. However, online courses require students to be self-disciplined and self-motivated. This study will focus on the advantages and limitations of online courses for students.

Arguments for Online courses

Online courses are less costly compared to traditional classes. Students do not have to travel to classes, nor pay tuition fees. All they need is a computer, or a laptop, connected to the Internet. Some colleges provide free internet to some of their online students. Online colleges that function without traditional campuses are capable of passing some savings onto their online students (Littlefield). Students do not have to worry about the rising prices of textbooks and other reading materials.

Online courses offer flexibility to students, especially those who are far away from their preferred colleges. Students can take their courses from anywhere in the world at any time, as long as they have access to the course material (Baxter and Kirpalani 186). Schedules are not as strict as in normal classrooms. Online courses create flexibility in the speed of learning; during the times of learning events; as well as in the place of learning (Barbera and Reimann 113). Online courses allow students to learn without the exhaustion of commuting and other unnecessary disturbances.

Online courses can be accessed through the Internet at any time. Students can read, and review lectures and discussions relevant to their courses at any time of the day (Top Benefits of Online Education). For students who take time to understand concepts, they can access the lecture notes whenever they feel prepared to learn. Online courses can reduce discrimination in colleges, especially among black students who often feel disadvantaged through face-to-face learning (Haynie). With online studies, no one will care about the student’s color or race. Online courses allow them to study without disturbances.

Through online studies, employed people do not have to leave their jobs to attend classes. They can work during the daytime and study during the evening. Taking online courses has helped employees to remain competitive without asking for time off to undertake further studies (Snyder). Working and attending classes can be tedious to many employees, thus, online courses can allow employees to study at their own convenient places. Students create their own schedules to ensure they have covered everything that the course requires.

Arguments against Online courses

Many students do not have adequate information about online courses. They tend to think that online studies take less time than the usual traditional courses. According to Watkins and Corry, students undertaking online courses should expect to spend more time than they would in conventional on-campus courses (43). Students undertaking online courses miss a one-on-one interaction with their tutor, thus, requiring them to be active learners. They lack instructors who can keep them on track. Online courses require students to create their own way of learning, as they are responsible for their own learning.

Conclusion

Online courses offer numerous benefits to students, but they also create some limitations to them, too. Earning a degree without attending any classroom has helped many students to expand their education, as well as careers. Online courses are quite cheap and flexible. Students can access lecture notes and materials any time through Internet. However, each student should evaluate the online courses first; since not all students can perform well through online studies. When used well, an online study has the potential to transform higher education.
