Effects of English as a Global Language

English language is gaining significant momentum in the global social arena with its contributions affecting all areas of human activities. Nunan’s article presents keys facts about the effects of this language on matters related to education policies and curriculum development in countries within the Asia-Pacific region. The findings presented in this article show that with emergence of English as a global language, there are numerous positive contributions on educational policies and practices that can be achieved.  This means that English language is receiving immense appreciation even by people who utilizes it as a second language.

Some of the major practical steps taken to influence English as a global language on educational policy and practices include development of state’s frameworks on the method of adoption. Good examples are the Hong Kong Curriculum development Council paper, and the Japanese ministry of education language English language objectives (Nunan 598-600). The Chinese government’s paper aims to use English language in order to increase competitiveness of Hong Kong in business and trade aspects, help young Chinese to develop global outlook of knowledge-based economy, and enable young Chinese to use the language proficiently in their social activities beside an aim of helping them succeed in life ( Nunan 598). The same aspects have also been included in Japan’s framework paper on the importance of English in its economic and social development although presented as three main concepts (Nunan 600).

Despite the fact that these advantages have been discussed in details in this article, this is not the only dimension focused by the writer. (Nunan 599-604) goes further to discuss significant challenges facing adoption of this language, especially from non-native English speakers, such as the Japanese, Chinese, Koreans, and Taiwanese. For example, inequality to access English language has been reported to exist in most countries as determined by people’s economic abilities, home language interference, proficiency of English tutors, and the level of learner’s exposure (Nunan 605-611).
