Topic 1

Introduction

In a majority of cases, the life of an individual is dictated by several pre-existing circumstances. A good example is the fact that they will be born and find that a number of things done and accomplished by the people around them, including family, automatically become part of what they ought to consider as their options. Other factors such as gender, social status or class, cultural and political affiliation as well as the genealogy, among others are things that one cannot change, but will deal with. Such are the factors that affect ones choices in the decision-making and the prevailing circumstance in the pursuit of education and career (DeMarrais et al 32). On the other hand, it is worth noting that personal choices and decisions will come out as a force to reckon with in the process of overcoming surrounding challenges. This paper seeks to dwell on the sociological issues linking personal decisions, surrounding circumstances and other factors directing the progression in education and career.

Sociological issues in education and career

Coming from a family of minimum wage earning parents, as in my case, it is a challenge to make choices as concerns the career or educational path one is to take. For instance, parents who see a lot of potential in the child will demand an aspect of their input to be among the considerations as the tenets for making choice. Moreover, based on the social class and background, the path of education in terms of the institution to attend or the services to acquire is also a hurdle on the way towards accomplishing one’s career or educational goals. Apparently, in the educational system, the stages are clear on what kinds of skills or knowledge that one can accomplish. Most students from the low income earning families tend to consider the option of stopping their education at college or high school level. the ripple effect of this eventuality is that it has an impact on the trajectory of the career and one’s life in the future (DeMarrais et al 111).

Apparently, the stereotype that there are some races in the American society that specialize in particular arts or crafts rather  than advancement in the education plays a role in influencing a number of young people. Coming from a metropolitan area where various people embrace different types of people and their culture is a positive aspect. This is because, the social factors will not play a detrimental role, because, one is given the opportunity to make choices based on their ability, dreams and passion. It is at this point that personal choices regarding one’s life and future emerge as the key driving force (Chen 17).

Factors such as immigration and gender considerations come in as one advances from the educational arena towards the working environment. It is more advantageous to work in a multinational organization where the interaction is multi-cultured as well as all-inclusive (Hyles-Rainford 76). This helps one to find support as well as work comfortably in the bid to accomplish the career goals. On the other hand, despite all these macro sociological aspects of life, opportunities are available for very individual. It takes a personal choice or private initiative to pursue them diligently (Chen 22).

In conclusion, it is worth noting that personal choices have a strong link to the factors within the individual’s environment. Every day in the educational or career endeavors, there is a corpus of challenges that come in a variety of measures. In my opinion, how one will handle the existing sociological issues while making sure that there is a considerable balance between the aims and goals is dependent on deliberate personal choices.
