Inter-Professional Education

Inter-professional education (IPE) is a pedagogical approach to learning meant to prepare pharmacists to competently provide patient care in collaborative team settings. In essence, I have learned that IPE help pharmacists to successfully work with multidisciplinary teams of professionals through enhanced teamwork, collaboration, communication, and understanding one’s roles. Equally, I have learned IPE is primarily about being aware of one’s learning approach and exploring his or her understanding and experiences of working as a team towards the provision of patient care. Furthermore, I have established that IPE is integral towards addressing complex modern health concerns like patient safety, management of chronic diseases, and provision of primary care to vulnerable patients. Patient care tends to improve when professionals work as a team because each professional contributes unique knowledge and expertise. IPE enhances the medical practice because pharmacists are trained on how to work together in a collaborative manner to guarantee the provision of quality care, lower medical costs, and reduce medical errors.

It is significant for pharmacists to collaborate with other professionals to create a more efficient interdisciplinary health team and improve patient outcomes. By working in collaboration with other professionals, pharmacists are fit to access varied inputs, management insights, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and health promotion details useful in prescribing drugs and recommending care interventions. In particular, working in teams allows pharmacists to enthusiastically participate in the provision of comprehensive and wholesome care to the patients and consequently improve their outcomes. Collaboration not only improves the quality of care but also guarantees user satisfaction and efficiency when administering medical prescriptions. In short, IPE enhances the ability of pharmacists to collaborate with other professionals because imparts knowledge on fostering cooperation among all levels of caregivers to assure the provision of optimal service to clients.

Not long ago, I had an opportunity to work with two physician assistant majoring students to solve virtual patient cases. In the process of the seminar session, I discovered that working together in a team requires impeccable communication and collaboration skills. Therefore, I intend to more substantially build and improve my communication and collaboration skills. I plan to improve my collaboration skills by displaying respect for all members of the inter-professional team as well as recognizing one’s scope of practice and limits of competence. Effective understanding of one’s scope of practice is essential in role assignment. Besides, showing respect encourages each member to participate in the process of providing care without any fear. In the same way, I plan on fulfilling my roles in a timely manner to align with the team activities and efforts of other members. Conversely, I plan on improving my communication skills by demonstrating proficiency in verbal and written English language. Equally, I plan to select appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication techniques in the future when working with an inter-professional team to enhance clarity and understanding of medical issues discussed. Ultimately, I intend to manage conflicts arising from disagreements arising from team interactions in the most professional way to encourage the voluntary participation of other members.
