Leadership Case Study
Question One
The two leaders possess emergent leadership. Coach Bob Knight and coach Krzyzewski have coaching talent that was improved by playing basketball and coaching various teams in the US. The two coaches earned various prestigious titles in the US with the teams they were coaching (Snook, Perlow, &Delacey, 2005). The two coaches also possess personal power. There is the internal motivation for the coaches when coaching their teams. Bob Knight was accused of strangling some of his players, which he agreed was a strategy of positioning the players (Snook, Perlow, &Delacey, 2005). Conversely, coach Krzyzewski used drills and kind speeches to motivate the players. There was a good relationship between the coaches and team members. This occurred despite the firing of coach Bob Knight at Indiana University.
The actions of Knight align with various leadership roles. This is because the aim of Coach Bob is to win the trophies through playing excellent games. However, the coach does not consider the strategies used in achieving the trophies. The players stated that Bob used physical and verbal abuse during training, which caused some of the players to leave the Indiana University basketball team (Snook, Perlow, &Delacey, 2005). Moreover, Coach Bob was ready to tackle anything that could deter him from achieving his goal. In this way, Bob was able to win various games and set an outstanding record of wins at Indiana University. Conversely, coach Krzyzewski exemplified managerial roles. Krzyzewski balanced his coaching skills with family and parenthood in the teams that he coached. This enabled Krzyzewski to develop strong relationships with the players in his team. The players described Krzyzewski as both a parent and a coach (Snook, Perlow, &Delacey, 2005). Krzyzewski had an outlined strategy for winning trophies that were based on motivating the players through his speeches and actions. Krzyzewski was also concerned about the welfare of the players and thus, had a personal relationship with the players (Snook, Perlow, &Delacey, 2005). Furthermore, besides coaching the Duke University team, Krzyzewski worked in the faculty of business at the university. Therefore, Krzyzewski achieved his goals because of excellent management skills in his career.
Question Two
The coaches had traits that significantly influenced their performance in coaching. Krzyzewski exhibited intelligence traits in his career (Gill, 2011). The coach was able to develop a good relationship with the players which resulted in big successes. The coach understood the needs of the players and attended to their needs, which enhanced the development of the relationship. Although initially, Krzyzewski lacked self-confidence, he acquired self-confidence when by playing basketball at Military Academy. Moreover, the discovery of Krzyzewski by his former coach, Bob Knight, increased his confidence in coaching the Dukes University team. Krzyzewski was also determined towards winning the matches. This is exhibited through the outstanding winning record that he set at Duke University. Krzyzewski was very social with his players (Snook, Perlow, &Delacey, 2005). The players describe Krzyzewski as a coach and a parent (Snook, Perlow, &Delacey, 2005). There was also personal interaction between the coach and the players such as when Krzyzewski visited one of his players in hospital (Snook, Perlow, &Delacey, 2005). Thus, Krzyzewski can be described to be conscientious. This is because Krzyzewski was organized, thorough, decisive, and dependable with his players (Northouse, 2013). Krzyzewski was also able to control all his roles effectively (Northouse, 2013).
Conversely, Bob displayed various traits such as self-confidence, determination, and intelligence (Gill, 2011; Northouse, 2013). Bob had confidence in winning the competitions. Apart from motivation, Bob instilled confidence in players to help them in winning the matches. Coach Bob was also determined towards achieving his goals in coaching. Bob aimed at winning the matches and developing an outstanding basketball team. Bob did everything possible even physical and verbal abuse of players to ensure the team won the competitions (Snook, Perlow, &Delacey, 2005). The coach was also intelligent which helped in developing appropriate strategies to win the matches. Indiana University set an outstanding winning record during the coaching of Bob Knight (Snook, Perlow, &Delacey, 2005). Therefore, Bob can be described to be extraversion (Northouse, 2013). Bob was assertive and possessed positive energy, which compelled him towards winning the competitions (Northouse, 2013).
