Introduction to Project Management

A project is a short-term enterprise carried out to form a unique result or service (Project Management Institute, 2013). PMBOK is an identified measure for the management of the project. It describes the set norms, processes, methods, and practices. This body developed from the identified good actions of the practitioners in project management (Sharma, 2013). Through this body, direction is provided to those managing personal projects. When starting a project, a project charter develops the charters process of the initiating process group. This is significant as it helps to create the document, which authorizes the project officially. This integration also documents the early requirements for the satisfaction of the stakeholders’ demands and expectations. These official communications are written down to include the primary targets and any assumptions made and limitations within the project (Sharma, 2013). The sponsor and the stakeholders write this document in their own language to express the scope of the project. Hence, it overrides other documents in terms of significance and relevance in all stages as it includes the objectives and the approaches to be followed when carrying out the project. It also documents the desires and expectations of the project stakeholders and the sponsors.

The scope statement is usually produced in the process of defining scope process of planning of the project. Its main significance is to define and record the needs of the stakeholders in a bid to meet the goals of the project. The scope critically describes a project in the process of its development. The result of this scope statement is the updates of the documents. The scope statement includes the product of the project, the expected users, and the characteristics of the product. This document is highly significant as it contains the names of the project owner, the associates, and the sponsors of the project, project charter, problem statement, requirements, and deliverables of the project. The goals and purpose of the project are also indicated in this document. As the main document of the project, it also verifies the partial goals that the project will cover and the estimates of the cost (International Journal of Project Management, 2015). In addition to these, it contains the management plan, assumptions, and threats of the project and the acceptance strategies to achieve the goals and objectives of the project.

PMBOK is a framework that emphasizes planning, performance, and continuous assessment of the work (International Journal of Project Management, 2015). Through various processes and the groups, it is able to execute the plans. However, it does not entail creation of the life cycle. Both process groups and the project cycles are involved in the planning, execution and evaluation of the process. Project process groups are categorized into five: the initiating, executing, planning, closing, monitoring, and controlling. These groups are different from the life cycle structure. The project cycle is the collection of phases from its initial stages to its end (International Journal of Project Management, 2015). It describes the work that must be done, deliverables to be generated, the parties involved and the control and approval of each case. Phases in a project can be as many as possible as long as the project meets its targets. The categories in the process groups are however five in total. These process groups can be repeated in every phase of the project while the process phases cannot be repeated in the groups.
