My Personal Statement of Computer Science
The advent of computer devices has saturated world markets in the recent years, and people’s choice of these products has been dependent on the graphical user interface. My interest in computer grew when I was in Khalid Bin Al-Waleed high school, as I learned various skills on computer usage and designing programs using Programming Languages, such as Java, C, C++, and Visual Basic among others. I realized that my passion was in Programming Languages, and that is the area I would like to focus on in my further studies. I am fascinated by the roles of a programmer as an active and useful individual to people and organizations through writing codes to create and analyze specific projects or programs for them.
I have a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science and Engineering, which I acquired from Taibah University in Al-Madinah City in Saudi Arabia. My background of using Visual Basic Program and the desire to be a contributor to the software industry motivated me to take this course at the University. The college courses were also instrumental in learning disparate level languages, Programming, Network, and Security, which evoked my creativity through new ideas and gave me confidence as a problem solver.
I took part in the International Arab Conference on Information Technology (ACIT’2011), conducted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where I presented my senior research project in E-learning systems and the needs of an educational environment. The project provided me with an opportunity to search widely about E-learning, where I came across elements I had never thought about, including the creation of new tools and features. I used the Dokeos system together with my classmates; where the developed features were plugged into an open-source LMS (e-Learning Management System) to help learners achieve more with the proper environment. Among the features included were translation tool, Islamic calendar, SMS tool, and sound test, which were deemed to be suitable for students in the Arab societies.
Another valuable experience I had was working as a Teacher Assistant (TA) in my university after graduation for the past two years. I am proud of the skills and the ease with which I taught some students beginner and advanced level courses in the computer laboratory. Interaction between my students and I were free and friendly, with lessons divided into manageable steps. For instance, when teaching Programming, I used PowerPoint in the presentation of the main ideas and the blackboard to elaborate the concepts in details.
Through my work as a TA, I was able to secure a scholarship that will enable me study and improve my degrees for Masters and get a Ph.D. I wish to conduct research and create more body of knowledge on Programming Language and Computer Security. Therefore, my aim is to be part of a valued team that will create cost effective, efficient, and worthwhile computers for the consumers. I am currently pursuing a computing A-Level course, which I feel is the first step towards realizing my goals towards my university and society.
I would like to take high-level courses offered in Programming and Computer Security and would prefer an enrollment at Purdue University. I am sure that my choice of this institution is the best, and it will help me achieve my goal of becoming a researcher in the field and help people worldwide. The university life will be thrilling and will also open up other opportunities to have new experiences and meet interesting people.
