In most of the developing countries, economic development without sufficient environmental protection has lead to prevalent environmental damage, leading to the creation of new environmental harms. The populations especially within the town areas are at risk of suffering adverse health effects as a result of the increasing problems of severe air, water and the general environmental pollution. It has been estimated that about a half of the illnesses that affects mankind today occur as a result of long term exposure to environmental pollution. A number of these environmental related illnesses are however not easily detectable and may be acquired during youthful stage and later manifested at an old age. Inappropriate managing of solid waste is among the key grounds of ecological contamination and degradation in urban centers. Most of these regions do not have solid waste bylaws and good dumping facilities including the dangerous wastes which may be infectious, toxic and radioactive (McGranahan & Frank 50). Environmental protection therefore can be defined as the process of conserving the naturally existing resources, the preservation of the present state of the surroundings and where it is probable reversing ecological damages. Environmental pollution is among the major problems that affect humankind today. This paper therefore addresses the effects of environmental pollution and the need for environmental conservation.

Environmental Pollution and Protection

Ecological contamination consists of five major types of effluence including air, water, soil, noise and light. Among these five elements of environmental contamination, air contamination is by far the most dangerous form of pollution. Air pollution is generally caused by the harmful substances normally emitted by vehicles, from factories, and even smoke that result from burning of leaves and cigarettes which are very harmful to the environment and results in a lot of damage to human and the atmosphere. Evidence of increasing air pollution is mostly depicted in lung cancer, asthma, allergies and numerous breathing problems along with stern irreparable damage to the general ecosystem. Even though air pollution is known as an emerging public health problem, a number of the developing states do not have data for evaluating its real dimension. The reality that air pollution coexists, with other significant public health issues including low immunization coverage, undernourishment and even sanitation deficiencies, which are highly considered in circumstances where economical resources are inadequate, has belated the actions required for adequate assessment, evaluation and the control of air pollution in most of the urban centers in the developing world. Gases such as the chlorofluorocarbons that are released from the fridges, air conditioners, deodorants as well as insect repellents cause adverse effects to the earth’s environment. The Significance of Conservation of the Environment

Safeguarding and conservation of the surrounding is a critical issue. It is the responsibility of every individual, association as well as institution to protect the environment. Awareness on environmental protection needs to be disseminated at each level. Uncontaminated air, water and soil as well as sufficient open space and plentiful natural resources including all other environmental elements ensure the health of mankind and contribute to the establishment of a healthy community. Second, taking care of the environment ensures the safeguarding the wealth of the community. Ensuring the water supply such as the streams, swaps and all other water bodies are kept uncontaminated is not just a matter of environmental quality protection but a necessity. Third, the environment should be protected for the purpose of creating a more enjoyable and better quality of life. The physical beauty of the general environment, the recreational and relaxation areas, make life more enjoyable for people. A pleasing environment helps in strain reduction and motivates communication which results in better life worth. Fourth, it enhances the aesthetic nature of the environment. Living amidst the natural and man made beauty usually promotes good health and better life quality and also contributes to the stimulation of pride and a sense of ownership of the environment. It motivates individuals to conserve the environment both bodily as well as communally and gives them expectation. Fifth, environmental protection is important for the purpose of attracting new, environmental friendly business and the sustainability of the economic health. A society that takes care of its environment is an attractive place to live and work, particularly for the green businesses; the businesses that are mainly concerned with environmental conservation (Cramer 73-76).

Sixth, environmental protection can be done for the purpose of attracting guests and the new inhabitants. Visitors normally seek out regions where the general quality of the surrounding is high for their science and leisure value. Individuals who seek new dwellings, either for retirement or for other purposes usually looks for pleasant and attractive environment. Seventh, it preserves the history of the community. The protection of the historic buildings as well as the some of the sites of the old settlements and the battlefield, or conservation of the untouched spots from which the original settlers initially viewed a community can be significant to the pride of a community and to the preservation of social memory. Eighth, is for the protection of the general community from environmental catastrophe. For instance, trees cutting on the sides of hills can result in mudslides which carry away societies and change the ordinary land. Ninth, it protects the rare species and preservation of the ecologies. The protection of the environmental quality can ensure that the protection of habitat and also help in preservation of the endangered animals and plants. The disruption of the ecosystem usually results to unanticipated negative outcomes including global warming, erosion as well as the vanishing of species. Lastly, individuals should also protect the environment for the purpose of being good stewards of the planet. According to (Cramer 73-76), the planet Earth is the only planet that human beings live in, and is the duty of every individual to take good care of its natural environment.

When Individuals Should Protect the Environment

The environment should also be protected for the purpose of providing a more enjoyable and better quality of living standards and for the purpose of enhancing the aesthetic nature of the environment. The environment should be protected at all time but especially when threatened. In order to ensure that the environment is protected, there is the need of developing stronger national environmental regulatory organizations, with the power of setting environmental goals and enforcing laws, together with supporting policies and institutions that emphasize environmental pollution prevention and continuous improvement, increased transparency and improved cooperation.
