Network Repair Analysis

Optical fiber cables have made fast internet access easily available and have changed the mode of business in many offices. An office that has its internet disrupted will lose a major portion of its working hours and this will result in huge losses as online transactions and messages cannot be sent. This means that when an office network is being constructed there are various parameters that must be checked to prevent the frequent disruption of the network signal. As shown below, when repairs are done there are also specific tests conducted to pinpoint the causes of disruption so as to have a quicker repair of the area network.

The Open System Interconnection model is the best for testing the problems of the network with the first analysis being of the physical layer. It is important to check if all the equipment is powered up and if there is any physical damage to the apparatus or cables. The length of the optic cable can also be measured in cases where it was installed by a different individual or company; due to attenuation an Ethernet cable should not be more than a hundred meters. The network cable can also be replaced with another one to test if it is the problem (Benjamin). A cable tester is however the tool often used as it will show the twisted pair that is damaged and a new RJ 45 connector can be used together with a crimping tool to rectify the problem.

The data link layer should then be tested to check if the disconnection is due to network port hardware addresses being configured incorrectly. The ping test is conducted to check is a computer can communicate with other computers within the local area network and is used to test which computers are not yet connected. The ping test is used to see if the domain name system (DNS) server has been configured properly and when done will show the hostname as an IP address (Addison).

It should then be confirmed that each node has an IP address and a default gateway because the gateway is what is used to send traffic. The telnet test can be used to check the ports which are open determining which ones have a problem and if any are available. The protocols on the firewalls should then be checked as well as the Dynamic Network Address Termination.  The Application Layer should be the last level checked and requires inspection of DNS settings and POP3, HTTP, FTP and SMTP. The Integrated services digital network (ISDN) also contains a termination code q931 that can be used to disconnect parts of the network depending on the prefix used and this assists in finding the reasons for network disruption (Benjamin).

Network disruption is a serious problem in both commercial and residential buildings as it can lead to loss of business or the denial of essential services such as communication with family. When a network is disconnected it is important to first inspect the physical layer to ensure that there is no physical apparatus damaged and a testing tool can be used to check if all the twisted pairs in the Ethernet cable are functioning, Tests can then be performed such as the use of pinging to see which workstations are connected. The Telnet test is also an effective tool used in seeing ports open for allocation. As more is studied on the subject, more effective and permanent solutions can be discovered to communication disruption.
