1.0 Introduction

A train can be defined as a type of rail transport that comprise of a series of vehicles that usually runs on a rail track to transport goods and passengers. Trains have highly impacted lives of individuals in various ways across the globe. At first trains were recognized as the slowest means of transport, but with it is now evolving to be one of the fastest means of travel.

2.0 Background Information about Trains

The present background information on trains can be looked at in the span of 200 years ago. The first train was made between 1804 and 1808 by Richard Trevithick. The first locomotive resembled a train as shown in the picture below and he referred to it as “Catch Me Who Can”.

He used the train to take several people for rides and it could travel for 12 mile per hour. Every passenger was required to pay some amount of money to be given an opportunity to ride the train.

In 1829, Robert Stephenson and George came together to share ideas on how they would build the best locomotive and their locomotive called “The Rocket” was considered the best. The train formed the basis for all steam engines afterwards. Throughout the American civil war, trains were used by the confederate armies in the transportation of troops and supplies. The trains played a significant function in transporting the troops to where they were required quickly. Between 1900 and 1905, several people made train that was faster and comfortable and this made travelling very easy. After several years of burning coal, cities became very dirty and this forced New York to use electricity to power the subway and these types of trains were referred to as cable cars. In 1925, the American Locomotive company invented a new type of train that used electricity made by a cable motor.

In 1930, a new train called Pioneer Zephyr was constructed by General Motors Corporation. The train was fast because it could travel 78 miles per hour. In 1938, a steam locomotive was invented and it was the first steam record to be ever recorded. It could travel 120 miles per hour and it still maintain this record for a steam locomotive.

In 1945 after the Second World War, individuals started using diesel engines as compared to steam engines (Trainhistory.net, 2014). In 1964, the Japanese built a new train and they referred to it as Shinkansen. In 2002, China faced a major problem of transporting individuals between two city airports. The city decided to use maglev to assist them address their problem. The train used power of magnets to move and they were sure it would help in saving time (Trainhistory.net, 2014). The train had the capability to travel 430 miles every hour. Currently, there are various trains that are used ranging from long and short distance trains, and freight trains among others. The present trains can carry a large number of people and cargo at a faster speed.

3.0 Why trains are the best way of Transport

3.1 Capacity

Trains have the ability to carry large number of passengers and large quantities of goods compared to other means of transport like road transport

3.2 Safety

Trains are a safe means of transport because of the limited number of accident and associated injuries as compared to other modes of transportation for instance road transport.

3.3 They are reliable

The capability to depend on materials and goods being delivered in time is significant to a business. For instance, thousands of hours are lost annually because of road congestion in Britain. Rail transport provides a disciplined network in terms of planning managing time and strictly following timetables making it a reliable means of transport. Studies indicate that over eight out of ten trains finish their journey in time.

3.4 Traffic Jam Reduction

As earlier stated, a train is used to transport a large number of passengers and such a big number implies that there are less people and cars on the roads. Additionally, the use of trains can also result in a decrease in the number of accidents, pollution, and less time wasting.

3.5 Speed

The typical time required to transport individuals and cargo from one area to the other by trains has become quite competitive as compared to other means of transport. The transport sector is trying to increase the speed of trains by reducing

4.0 Types of Trains

There are various types of trains as explained below:

4.1 Freight Train

It refers to any type of train that does not carry passengers. Its cars can be used for keeping various types of goods ranging from gasses, solid, and liquids. In most cases, these types of trains are for industrial use (Trainhistory.net, 2014).

4.2 Rapist Trains

These are high speed trains that are usually made with streamlined design that provide as little resistance as possible. Such type of trains could travel up to a speed of 300km/h.

4.3 Inter-city Trains

These are trains used for community transportation. They are especially built for safe travel at low speeds at both underground subway lines and land based railways (Trainhistory.net, 2014).

4.4 Short and Long Distance Trains

This category of train is majorly used for travelling between countries and cities. They have dining and sleeping cars that are necessary for longer journeys.

4.5 Trams

They are trains public transportation at a slow speed. They use electricity and they are mostly used in highly populated areas (Trainhistory.net, 2014).

4.6 Mine Trains

They are special type of trains that are used for underground excavations of coal and rock. They are small, long lasting, and have the ability of transporting goods in a very hostile environment.

5.0 Problems that can be solved using Trains

5.1 Road Congestion

Trains play a vital role of reducing the number of vehicles on a country’s road. Because of the higher ability of rail, freight trains can typically replace approximately 50 heavy vehicles. For instance, in the year 2009 and 2010, an extra 6.6 million lorry journeys would have been required if an equivalent rail businesses were done by road (Mehta, 2014). For instance, trains produce below one percent of the total carbon dioxide emitted in the United Kingdom, while road transport produces a total of 21%. A freight train can replace 50 vehicles from roads in Britain.

5.2 Environmental Protection

Trains are said to be the most energy efficient type of transportation. For instance, in order to transport one passenger one kilometer, a car requires one to five times fuel required by a train (Mehta, 2014). This averages raises to four to eight times in case of air transport. This implies that trains are very reliable when it comes to protecting the environment.

6.0 Example of Best Trains in the World

They include maglev and super maglev. The maglev train that is used to carry vehicles with magnets, but it does not use axles, wheels, and bearings.

7.0 The use of more Trains in KSA

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia can improve railway transport by building more railway lines and buying more trains. This is because of the associated advantages with the use of trains. For instance, more trains in KSA will imply that the transportation of both cargo and passengers will be made easy. Additionally, it will reduce congestion on roads because presently, trains carry a large number of passengers compared to other means of transport for instance road transport.  More trains will also imply a reduction in traffic congestion, accidents, and congestion. Presently, there is only one train in Saudi Arabia, assuming that the country invests more in railway transport, a large number of people will move from using vehicles and buses hence reducing congestion and jam that would be caused by these individuals on roads. Another reason that explains why KSA should invest in more trains is that they can help in protecting the environment. This is because trains have been found out to be the most energy-efficient means of transportation. More trains will imply fewer vehicles on roads and this will reduce oil leakage on roads hence protecting the environment.

8.0 Reasons of lack trains in KSA

Presently, there is only one train in Saudi Arabia connecting Dammam and Riyadh. Trains operate in both directions five times daily, travelling through Abqaiq and Ahsa at an estimated time of 4.5 hours.

The main reasons that explain why there are fewer trains in KSA are that the government has not put focused much on railway transport. Even though the construction of railway transport is costly, its associated benefits are supposed to entice the government to invest in the sector. Secondly, the transport sector of Saudi Arabia aimed at completing road transport first before embarking on the construction of railway lines (Briginshaw, 2014). The main challenge is that is that the sector wants to have everything in place for instance raw materials and expertise before they start working on it. The limited number of trains and neglect of railway transport are based on the fact that the Saudi Arabia has a well-developed road and air transport.

9.0 The Future of Trains in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Plans are underway to construct more railway lines in the country. Presently, there are only two major lines connecting Riyadh and Dammam. The Saudi Railways Organizations (SRO) operates on this line (Saudirailways.org, 2014). The government is planning to construct the railway lines to the port of Jeddah. There is a big railway project going on to link Makkah with Jeddah and Madinah city. The main aim of this railway line is to offer an alternative for Muslims moving within cities (Saudirailways.org, 2014).

In conclusion, trains serve a significant role when it comes to the transportation of goods and services. Additionally the majority of the individuals prefer to use trains globally because they are reliable, cheaper in terms of cost, safe, and fast. They also play a significant in reducing environmental problems for instance pollution. Little attention has been paid to railway transport in Saudi Arabia, but plans are underway to improve it. It is recommended that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia should build more railway lines in its country to ease transportation.
