“The ultimate reality is numbers rather than material”-Pythagoras
In the beginning God Geometrized, with this statement, Pythagoras reduced the creative process to the science of numbers and geometry. In his quest for answers, the philosopher was interested in much more than proving the mathematical solutions, rather, together with his followers, he explored the principles of mathematics, the aspect of the mathematical figures and the idea of proof. It is therefore evident that by searching for a divine truth through mathematics, Pythagoras made important discoveries in different areas of math and science, for this reason, it is evidently true that the ultimate reality is found in numbers rather than materials.
The concept of evolution is considered to be helical (Blaha, 2002). This is exhibited by the spiral like formation of the galaxies; the growth spirals, circular motions, elongation in plants as they reach for the sunlight and the equiangular spirals in the sea shells, for example, the chambered nautilus shell (Fisichela, 2008). The ratio of the diameter of the nautilus shell, one to the other is 1.618. The leaf course on plant stalks, insect segmentations, and all proportions of a human body, take after the celestial approach. From the evidence provided, it is certain that nature is guided by a numeric and divine geometric design which determines the creative activities (Blaha, 2002). These activities are only comprehended using planes of actuality. The creative activities show the inner workings orders of all nature activities using numbers.
Numerous correlations exist, between the order; which is implicit in numbers and the order that is evident in nature. Mathematics can be used to explain the euphony plus the arrangement of the Universe (Fisichela, 2008). Numbers can therefore be perceived as primary elements, this is because people tend to use the number first before an object is mentioned. For example, if a person has a cup, the number one comes in first in that the person has only one cup. For this reason, numbers are seen as not just implicit in the being of things, but they actually appear first. Pythagoras harnesses the natural associations of mathematics and correlates the implicit order to the universe (Fisichela, 2008). Math equations are therefore used as tools that reveal a type of fundamental order to the Universe.
Pythagorean cosmology is discerned as one. Today, one is regarded as an odd number, interestingly; the Pythagorean philosophers regarded the number one as a holistic number that has odd and even elements in a state of the union. According to Fisichela (2008) the natural numbers are not odd nor are they even, they alternate by 1 (Fisichela, 2008). This implies that the system of numbers originates from the number one and through a holistic superfluity, reflects odd and even numbers. The odd and even numbers are used to provide the framework which is used to explain the opposite characteristics which are witnessed in nature, by correlating the odd and the even numbers (Blaha, 2002). Odd and even numbers are correlated to the different type of properties which serve as the fundamental forces of the cosmos. It is interesting to see that odd numbers contain what Pythagoras called the limiter property and even numbers have the property of unlimited. The functions of the Limiters and the unlimited numbers, is a vital property of the Pythagorean universe (Blaha, 2002).
Despite the fact that many people found faults in combining a higher truth with mathematics (Aristotle was immensely critical of Pythagoras confusion of the physical and the metaphysical) it cannot be denied that Pythagoras was the first person to use mathematics to interpret the world (Lindberg, 2010). Pythagoras interpreted the world with special emphasis on order plus symmetry; he propounded that the cosmos were expressible in regards to numbers. The philosopher discovered many facets, for example, five regular solids and the Pythagorean Theorem (Fisichela, 2008).
Pythagoras assertions are supported by the Hermetic philosophy, which was articulated by Hermes Trismegistus. In his text “As it is above, so it is below”, Hermes claims that man is an analogists, this means that he studies relations in all the objects (Blaha, 2002). Hermes uses the tendency of analogy to assert that the analogous conditions traverse the planes of reality. Every article in the universe speaks to some part of awareness and all the common conditions are images of other worldly certainties which may be perceived as having numeric or geometric qualities (Fisichela, 2008).
Galileo; a mathematician, asserted that the book of nature is recorded using the confab of Geometry (Blaha, 2002). Galileo insisted that the inherent philosophy ought to be expressed in the language of mathematics, since the universe is mathematical in its structure. Galileo perceived the concept of the universe as revealing itself using mathematics (Fisichela, 2008). Plato complimented Pythagorean belief by saying “as the eyes are fixed upon astronomy, so are the ears fixed upon the movement of harmony this sciences are closely akin as the Pythagoreans say and we agree with them” Plato’s perception is instrumental since it exemplifies the Pythagorean concept of the unity of Mathematics, music and astronomy (Fisichela, 2008).
The eventual reality is mathematica contrary to being material. All aspects in the Universe are fashioned after numbers (Blaha, 2002). Numbers are first in nature’s entity. As alleged by Pythagoras, the concept of mathematical numerals is the foundation of all objects. Even though Lindberg asserts that it is hard to determine if Pythagoras believed that material things were constructed out of numbers. Pythagoras perceived the concept of number as a fundamental aspect of actuality and mathematics as a tool for learning about reality. From this perspective, it is true that numbers are the only concepts that can best explain the universe.
From Pythagoras assertion, it is evidently true that numbers are the key to understanding the cosmos. Numbers can be described as the language of the Universe, when people study this language, they are provided with an opportunity to learn how the cosmos operates. By using numbers individuals have succeeded in connecting with the cosmos on a fundamental aspect. From this analysis, it is evident that various numeric symbols, are used to represent the manifold though profound universal elements of the creative systems. When these relationships are recognized and grasped, they are reflected in various levels of the multidimensional universe. As has been indicated in the analysis, the concept of the Universe is Helical; this is evidenced by various factors, for example, spherical shapes of the galaxy. There exist a tie-up between the order which is implicit in numbers and the one that is evident in nature. The actuality is numerical, rather than material.
