Also known as manic depressive disorder, bipolar disorder is a psychological condition whereby a person suffers from mood swings. An individual who suffers this disorder usually experiences varying moods that range between manic highs to depressive lows. It is an illness of the brain that can lead to swings in the moods, energy and activity levels of the person who is affected. It can significantly impair the ability of the person to engage in day-to-day activities.  Bipolar disorder is mostly rampant in youths in their later stages of teenage or early adulthood. However, more than half of the cases usually occur to individuals below the age of 25 years.

There is still uncertainty over the particular cause of bipolar disorder but it is considered to have links to heredity. Most people who are diagnosed with the condition have a history of having been experienced by members of their families. There are also claims that bipolar disorder is caused by the accumulation of Calcium in body cells. However, this is still being investigated. However, it should be noted that prolonged use of such drugs may have side effects like nausea, weight gain, tremors and hyperthyroidism.
